We are all partial to that long day too-tired-to-cook conversation that goes something along the lines of, “shall we go somewhere to eat out?”. Yorkshire is full of delicious and hearty food establishments, from traditional cosy pubs to contemporary cafes, and so in times where you're looking out for somewhere to eat, we have compiled our favourite places in Thirsk (and one slightly beyond) to satisfy your growing appetite to eat. First up…
Dog & Gun, Kanyton (1.5 Miles)
Our customers go wild for this traditional North Yorkshire pub, being only 1.5 miles from Hillside, the location couldn’t be better. The pub is rated #1 in Thirsk on TripAdvisor and its obvious why; Head Chef Lucy has a menu full of household favourites, not to mention an extensive specials board that changes on the regular. Just touching on the starters… The garlic bread - yes, garlic bread is an acceptable starter here - has an impeccable balance of cheese and garlic. Let's just say that if you order it to share you will not be happy to see the person opposite you stealing your slices of cheesy goodness. Instead, we urge you to encourage them to go for the potato skins, another favourite of ours. The mountain of potato skins come alongside individual portions of garlic mayonnaise and sweet chilli dip - delicious. If you have a weakness for burgers, prepare to have your resolve tested as their burger options jump off the menu immediately and are constructed from the finest of ingredients (the melt in your mouth description was made for the burgers served here). Book yourself in to avoid any disappointments, especially for Sunday lunches!
Gold Cup, Nether Silton (4 Miles)
Tucked away in Nether Silton lies an outstanding selection of homemade pies. Local farmers flock to the Gold Cup for its heart-warming (and filling) offerings at excellent value - you won't be leaving hunrgry! Wednesday, AKA “Pie night”, is true value for money, a tenner gets you a sensational homemade pie, mountains of chips - literal mountains - and some hearty peas to finish it off. Pies change on a weekly basis but its staple Steak and Mushroom alongside Chicken and Leak means you’ll leave feeling utterly satisfied.
White Horse Café, Thirsk (5.5 Miles)
“Is it Fish and Chip Friday?” The age old question that faces many of us after a long week at work. The White Horse Café is synonymous with Thirsk, being a stone’s throw away from the Clock it is a central part of the town and responsible for thousands of hearty meals throughout the town. Both its restaurant and take away counter provide visiting tourists and locals alike with a hub of activity, with nearby benches taken up by visiting biker groups and people exploring the depth of the market town.
If you wish to travel further afield, this is our wildcard entry and definitely worth the trip.
Lockwoods, Ripon (26 Miles)
Set within the cathedral city of Ripon, Lockwoods is a multidimensional Restaurant bringing you a modern European menu focusing on flavour, not Geography. Just to reassure you folks itstays true to its Yorkshire roots within its menu too (and it’s not limited to Yorkshire puds). With a Waitrose Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year Award in 2016, its pedigree is plain to see, Check out their Instagram page to see their latest creations – it’s practically art.
