Our Top 4 Local Walk Recommendations
Sutton Bank
We are incredibly lucky that we have the Sutton Bank National Park Centre only twenty minutes away from Hillside Caravan Park. Thirsk’s world famous Vet and Author James Herriot declared the tremendous view from the dramatic Sutton Bank escarpment over the Vale of Mowbray and the Vale of York, the "finest in England".
Sutton Bank provides fantastic walking routes for all experience levels. Whether you have a route to follow, or are simply there to sit back and enjoy the beauty of North Yorkshire, Sutton Bank will leave you with long-lasting memories.
To ensure you get the very best walking routes we recommend you download the Lime & Ice app; this allows you to find out more about the National Park and ensures you don’t miss treasures like Gormire Lake. Oh, and did we mention that the App is completely FREE?
Take as many photos as you can, it really is a unique setting and one you won’t want to forget. Some walks are wheelchair accessible from the centre, including the iconic Kilburn White Horse.
Cowesby Loop
Staying close to Hillside we have the “Cowesby Loop”, a firm favourite with our customers over the years. This route takes you through the village of Cowesby – a stone’s throw away from the North Yorkshire Moors. You don’t need to be an experienced map reader for this one, just keep an eye out for the Church of St Michael as it will guide you on your way through the village.
The Dog and Gun Sprint
Hillside is fortunate to have the #1 restaurant in the Thirsk area (as seen on Trip Advisor) within walking distance. The Dog and Gun, a welcoming family run village pub set in the village of Knayton, pride themselves on homemade traditional pub food as well as an extensive specials board.
Just a 1.5 mile walk away from site, it is the perfect distance to build up those hunger levels before indulging in your starter… and main… and dessert. Trust us, you won’t be leaving the premises hungry. A special mention must also go to the pub's traditional Sunday roasts, no adjective could possibly describe the level of quality – we advise booking in as early as possible!
On-Site Walking
Any four-legged companion will love the sights, sounds, and smells of the farm land surrounding the site. The well-maintained walking routes guide you through a multitude of crops such as wheat, barley, oats and field beans. Un-like the main site, Dogs are allowed off their leads in these areas – however be aware of the wildlife if your dog is fond of a chase.
